Tulsi Vivah Katha In English: Mythological Story Of Tulsi Vivah

In a celestial narrative, Prabhu Shiva cast his divine radiance into the vast ocean, giving rise to a formidable figure known as Jalandhar, who eventually ascended to the throne as the mighty Ashur Raja. The capital of his dominion was named Jalandhar city.

Vrinda, the daughter of Daityaraja Kalnemi, became the consort of Jalandhar. Jalandhar, a powerful Maharaksas, harbored desires for Mata Lakshmi, but she, recognizing his origins from the sea, regarded him as a brother. Disheartened, Jalandhar turned to Mount Kailash, yearning to confront Prabhudess Parvati.

Bhagwan Devadhdev assumed the form of Shiva and approached Mata Parvati, yet she, using her yogic prowess, swiftly identified him and vanished. Infuriated, Mata Parvati disclosed the incident to Bhagwan Vishnu. Vrinda, Jalandhar’s devoted wife, held a pivotal role. The strength derived from her unwavering devotion shielded Jalandhar from defeat. To dismantle Jalandhar, dissolving Vrinda’s patibrata was imperative.

Bhagwan Vishnu, adopting the guise of a sage, ventured into the forest where Vrinda roamed alone. Accompanying the disguised Bhagwan were two illusory demons, whom he promptly devoured before Vrinda’s eyes. Impressed by his power, Vrinda inquired about Jalandhar, currently engaged in a battle with Mahadev on Mount Kailash.

Prabhu cleverly reconnected Jalandhar’s head using an illusion while entering his body. Unaware of this ruse, Vrinda, in her sattvic devotion, approached the assumed sage, unaware of the turmoil unfolding with her husband. Learning of this divine play, Vrinda, now angered, cursed Bhagwan Vishnu to transform into a heartless stone, a curse willingly accepted, manifesting as Shaligram.

The balance of the universe teetered as the devoted follower turned to stone. Witnessing this imbalance, all deities and goddesses beseeched Vrinda to modify her curse. Succumbing to her anger, Vrinda set herself ablaze. The very spot where Vrinda immolated herself gave rise to the sacred Tulsi plant. Bhagwan Vishnu consoled Vrinda, stating that her unparalleled love would bind her eternally to him as Tulsi.

From that moment, the annual celebration of Tulsi Vivah emerged, occurring on the day of Dev-Uthavani Ekadashi in the Kartik month. The tradition dictates that marrying Tulsi with the Shaligram form of Vishnu brings immense fame in both worlds.

The land once ruled by the demon Jalandhar is now known as Jalandhar. The temple of Sati Vrinda stands in Mohalla Kot Kishanchand. Legend has it that an ancient cave at this site led directly to Haridwar. Worshiping at the Sati Vrinda Devi temple for 40 days with pure devotion fulfills all desires.

In households where Tulsi resides, even Yama’s messengers cannot intervene untimely. At the moment of death, one who utters the name of Tulsi while keeping a Tulsi leaf and Ganges water in the mouth attains liberation from sins and reaches Vaikuntha Dham. Performing ancestral rites in the shadow of Tulsi and Amla grants moksha.
