India protests resolution on Manipur: LS Speaker Om Birla underlines India’s sovereignty

India protests resolution on Manipur: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla brought up the issue at the  bilateral meeting with European Union Vice-President Nicola Beer on the sidelines of G20 Parliamentary Speakers Summit (P20).

New Delhi, 15 Oct (City Times): India protests resolution on Manipur: India has registered a protest on the European Parliament’s recent move to bring a resolution on the Manipur issue.  Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla brought up the issue at the  bilateral meeting with European Union Vice-President Nicola Beer on the sidelines of G20 Parliamentary Speakers Summit (P20).

LS Speaker Om Birla underlines India’s sovereignty 

Underlining India’s sovereignty, Birla protested against bringing a proposal in the European Parliament on India’s internal issues. He insisted that every nation is sovereign and their internal issues should not be discussed by others. On her part, Beer stressed on closer relations between the European Parliament and India, adding that Europe is going through challenging times and sought India’s cooperation.

EU brings in resolution on human rights in Manipur

In July this year, when PM Narendra Modi visited France for the Bastille Day Parade, the European Parliament had brought in a resolution on the human rights situation in India, with a  pointed reference to the clashes in Manipur.

French Parliament calls on India over the issue

The Parliament in Strasbourg, France, had also called on Indian authorities to put in place measures to halt the violence in Manipur and protect all religious minorities. The move was rejected by India as “unacceptable”. Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra had said that it has been made clear to EU parliamentarians that it is a matter “absolutely” internal to India.

India objects to Canada PM statement on Nijjar killing

India was also slated to raise the issue of Canadian PM Justin Trudeau’s statement in the nation’s Parliament last month on the issue of India’s alleged  involvement in the killing of Nijjar.  Speaker of the Canadian Senate, Raymonde Gagne, skipped the Summit despite confirming her participation last week.

Birla also met Valentina Matvienko, Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of Russia, and cited the long-standing deep relations between the two countries . During his talks with his Turkish counterpart Numan Kurtulmus, Birla mentioned Operation Dost as a symbol of India’s friendship towards Turkey.
