Bharat vs. India Grows Opposition’s Dissent: Congress’s parliamentary leaders gathered at Sonia Gandhi’s residence. Following this, a crucial meeting of the opposition bloc, INDIA, is scheduled to take place at the residence of Mallikarjun Kharge

New Delhi, 05 September (City Times): Bharat vs. India Grows Opposition’s Dissent: In the wake of the recent buzz surrounding the potential change of India’s name to “Bharat,” the Opposition is abuzz with meetings and discussions. Currently, a gathering of Congress’s parliamentary leaders is underway at Sonia Gandhi’s residence. Following this, a crucial meeting of the opposition bloc, INDIA, is scheduled to take place at the residence of Mallikarjun Kharge, the party’s chief.

President of Bharat” vs. “President of India

This buzz began when news broke that President Droupadi Murmu’s invitation to G20 leaders introduced her as the “President of Bharat” instead of the traditional “President of India.” This unconventional terminology caught the attention of many and triggered a flurry of discussions and debates.

Bharat, The Mother Of Democracy

Adding fuel to the fire, the G20 booklet distributed to foreign delegates was titled “Bharat, The Mother Of Democracy.” It emphasized that “Bharat” is the official name of the country, a fact mentioned in the Constitution and in discussions dating back to 1946-48.

Speculation and Debate Ahead of Parliament’s Special Session

The timing of these developments is noteworthy, coming just before the commencement of a five-day special session of parliament, starting on September 18. Interestingly, the government has not provided any specific agenda for this session, leading to rampant speculation and intense debates.

India versus Bharat Debate

The controversy has reignited the age-old “India versus Bharat” debate, and opinions are sharply divided. Notably, several prominent BJP leaders and celebrities, including Amitabh Bachchan and Virender Sehwag, have expressed their support for the term “Bharat” on social media.

Opposition’s Outcry and Accusations

Conversely, the Opposition has raised strong objections, accusing the government of hastily responding to the formation of the INDIA bloc—a coalition of 28 opposition parties—just ahead of the upcoming general elections in the next year. Opposition leaders have stressed that the BJP has not received a mandate to alter the country’s name.

Kejriwal’s Question and Mamata’s Indignation

Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party chief, Arvind Kejriwal, posed a pointed question, “Will BJP replace ‘Bharat’ with something else if the INDIA alliance changes its name to Bharat?” This question highlights the uncertainty and potential implications of such a change.

West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, expressed her concerns, emphasizing that while the term “Bharat ka Samvidhan (Constitution of India)” is used in Hindi, the world recognizes the country by the name of India. Her statement underscores the practicality and global familiarity of the name “India.”

Jairam Ramesh’s Statement

Congress’s Jairam Ramesh shared his perspective on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Mr. Modi can continue to distort history and divide India, that is Bharat, that is a Union of States. But we will not be deterred. After all, what is the objective of INDIA parties? It is BHARAT—Bring Harmony, Amity, Reconciliation And Trust. Judega BHARAT Jeetega INDIA!” This statement underscores the Congress’s commitment to unity and harmony within the nation.

Mohan Bhagwat’s Influence

The backdrop of this debate includes a statement by Mohan Bhagwat, the chief of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the ideological mentor of the BJP. Bhagwat advocated for the country to be referred to as “Bharat,” emphasizing that it should remain “Bharat” regardless of location in the world. His remarks have added weight to the discussion and influenced the discourse on the country’s nomenclature.

The debate over whether to officially change the name of the country from “India” to “Bharat” has sparked intense discussions and triggered strong reactions across the political spectrum. With both supporters and critics voicing their opinions, the nation watches closely as this issue unfolds in the run-up to the parliamentary special session.
