ISRO’s Upcoming Gaganyaan Test: A Milestone Towards Ambitious Human Spaceflight Success ; Program includes 4 Abort Missions

ISRO’s Upcoming Gaganyaan Test : The Gaganyaan program includes four abort missions. After TV-D1, the second test vehicle mission (TV-D2) and the first uncrewed mission of Gaganyaan (LVM3-G1) will follow. Subsequently, the second set of test vehicle missions (TV-D3 and D4) and the LVM3-G2 mission with a robotic payload are planned.

Bengaluru, 15 September (City Times): ISRO’s Upcoming Gaganyaan Test :India’s space agency, ISRO, is gearing up for the first test vehicle mission of its ambitious human spaceflight program, Gaganyaan. This mission, known as TV-D1, aims to validate the crew escape system and is set to launch in the coming months.

A Series of Test Missions

The Gaganyaan program includes four abort missions. After TV-D1, the second test vehicle mission (TV-D2) and the first uncrewed mission of Gaganyaan (LVM3-G1) will follow. Subsequently, the second set of test vehicle missions (TV-D3 and D4) and the LVM3-G2 mission with a robotic payload are planned.

The crewed mission will be planned based on the success of these test vehicle and uncrewed missions.

Focus on Crew Escape System

The immediate focus of the upcoming mission is to validate the crew escape system. This critical aspect ensures the safety of astronauts in case of an emergency. The mission is scheduled to take place from Sriharikota, ISRO’s spaceport on India’s eastern coast.

Goals of the Gaganyaan Project

The Gaganyaan project aims to demonstrate India’s capability to send a crew of two to three members into a circular orbit approximately 400 kilometers above Earth’s surface. The mission duration is expected to range from one to three days, with a safe return to Earth by landing in designated locations in the Indian sea waters.

Human-Rated LVM3

The Gaganyaan mission will utilize the LVM3 rocket, ISRO’s heavy-lift launcher. To meet human rating requirements, all systems in the LVM3 rocket have been reconfigured and are now known as Human Rated LVM3 (HLVM3).

Orbital Module (OM)

The Orbital Module (OM) will orbit Earth and contains the Crew Module and the Service Module (SM). The OM features state-of-the-art avionics systems with redundancy to ensure crew safety.

Crew Module (CM)

The Crew Module is a habitable space for the astronauts with an environment similar to Earth’s. It consists of a double-walled structure, including a pressurized metallic inner structure and an unpressurized external structure with a thermal protection system. The CM houses crew interfaces, life support systems, avionics, and deceleration systems. It is designed for re-entry to ensure crew safety during descent and landing.

Service Module (SM)

The Service Module provides support to the Crew Module while in orbit. It contains thermal, propulsion, power, avionics systems, and deployment mechanisms. The SM plays a crucial role in the success of the mission.
