Katchatheevu Dispute: CM M K Stalin Claimed Island was taken over by the DMK party

Chennai, 18 August (City Times): Katchatheevu Dispute: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin chaired the Fisherman Welfare Conference in Rameswaram on Friday. He emphasized the need to understand the historical context of the Katchatheevu island issue. Stalin criticized indirectly the central government and said those who claim that the transfer of Katchatheevu was done freely they don’t know about the history. He pointed out that the island has a historical connection to India. He also mentioned that the island was taken over by the DMK party. Stalin sais that transfer of Katchatheevu to Sri Lanka through mutual agreements in 1974 was not done freely.

AIADMK’s Stance on Katchatheevu

He highlighted a significant detail: the AIADMK was the only party that walked out of the all-party meeting for Katchatheevu. This, according to him, demonstrates the party’s dedication to Tamil Nadu’s interests.

Karunanidhi’s Efforts and Assertion

Stalin emphasized the efforts of former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi. He went to Delhi and asserted that Katchatheevu island’s significance should not be overlooked. Karunanidhi’s letter underlined that the island wasn’t in favor of the Sri Lankan government and that it rightfully belonged to India.

Solution Lies in Katchatheevu’s Retrieval

The CM emphasized that the ultimate solution to the fishermen’s issue lies in the retrieval of Katchatheevu. He responded to Prime Minister Modi’s recent statement that the Katchatheevu island was given to Sri Lanka by the Indira Gandhi government in 1974.

Attacks on Indian Fishermen Raising Concerns

Stalin also raised worry with the Sri Lankan Navy’s harassment and assaults of Indian fishermen. He attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Union government for failing to appropriately address this problem. He stated that the present NDA government has led to an upsurge in these attacks.

Stalin’s Plea to PM Modi

In a letter written to Prime Minister Modi on July 20, CM Stalin urged him to address key issues with Sri Lanka President Ranil Wickremesinghe. This includes the retrieval of Katchatheevu and the concerns of Indian fishermen who face threats while pursuing their livelihood in the region.
