Apex Court Expresses Serious Concern Over Molestation and Naked Parade of Women (Manipur Violence)
New Delhi, July 20 (City Times): The Supreme Court of India has taken suo motu cognisance of the distressing viral videos from Manipur, depicting the molestation and naked parade of two women. (Manipur Violence)
The bench presided over by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dr. Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chadrachud described the use of women as a means of violence in such a charged atmosphere as “completely unacceptable.” The court granted the state and central governments one week to provide details of the actions taken in response to the incident.
“The government should intervene and take swift action. This behavior is simply unacceptable and represents the gravest violations of constitutional and human rights,” stated the CJI, expressing his profound concern over the matter.
The bench, visibly appalled by the footage, requested the Union and Manipur governments to submit reports by July 28 on the steps taken to bring the perpetrators to justice and to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Dr. Chadrachud emphasized that the timing of the video, whether from May or any other period, does not diminish the gravity of the issue. The use of women as instruments in communal clashes to perpetrate gender-based violence is a matter of deep concern to the Supreme Court.
