Nagpur heavy rains: Rescue Operation Underway

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis revealed that over 180 people, including 40 students from a school for the hearing and speech-impaired, have been successfully rescued amidst the rising waters. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are actively involved in these rescue efforts.

The situation worsened as the Ambazari area’s lake overflowed due to incessant rainfall. The overflow primarily affected low-lying areas, exacerbating the crisis. Fadnavis, who is also a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Nagpur, shared updates on the rain situation via social media.

As per Fadnavis’s later updates, two units of the NDRF and two units of the SDRF, organized into seven groups, have managed to rescue 140 citizens. Furthermore, 40 students from a school dedicated to those with hearing and speech impairments were also successfully evacuated.

According to the local weather department, Nagpur’s airport recorded a significant 106 mm of rainfall by 5.30 am. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted “severe/moderate thunderstorms with lightning” in isolated areas of Nagpur, Bhandara, and Gondia districts. Additionally, there is a possibility of “intense rain at isolated places” in these regions.

Widespread rainfall is expected in Wardha and some parts of Chandrapur, Bhandara, and Gondia districts. Furthermore, light rainfall is anticipated at isolated locations in Amravati, Yavatmal, and Gadchiroli.
