What Is Nithari case?

The Nithari case refers to a gruesome serial murder and rape case that took place in Nithari, a sector in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, India. The case came to light in 2006 when human remains, mainly body parts and skeletal remains of missing children and young women, were discovered in drains and sewers near the house of Moninder Singh Pandher, a businessman, and his domestic help, Surinder Koli.

Sliced The Bodies And and toss the pieces down drains

Surinder Koli, who worked at Pandher’s residence, would allegedly lure young children into the house, where he and Pandher would sexually assault and murder them. The victims’ bodies were dismembered, and the body parts were disposed of in the vicinity to eliminate evidence. To obliterate the evidence, they would slice up the children’s bodies and toss the pieces down drains. The case was made public after neighbours discovered the remains of a missing child in a sewer not far from Pandher’s house.

The shocking and horrifying nature of the crimes led to widespread outrage and a significant media and public response. It also raised questions about the efficiency of law enforcement agencies in handling such cases.(Nitahri Case Accused Acquitted)

Initially local police in Noida Started investigation

The Nithari case was initially investigated by the local police in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, after human remains were discovered near the house of Moninder Singh Pandher and his domestic help, Surinder Koli. The case came to light in late 2006 when neighbours found body parts and skeletal remains in the drains near Pandher’s residence in Nithari.

Taken into custody over disappearance of a victim

Koli and his employer Pandher were taken into custody over the disappearance of one of the victims. After Koli’s confession, the police started digging up the nearby land area and discovered the children’s bodies. The case was soon handed over to the CBI which registered 16 cases, charge sheeting Surinder Koli in all of them for murders, abductions and rapes besides destruction of evidence, and Pandher in one for immoral trafficking.

2 policemen suspended for failing to take action

Two policemen were also suspended for failing to take action despite being informed about a number of children missing. Several families of Nithari victims shifted elsewhere as they could not live near the house where the brutalities took place. Most of the victim families were migrants from West Bengal and Bihar who had come to NCR for jobs.(Nitahri Case Accused Acquitted)

Initial investigation raised suspicions about Pandher and Koli’s involvement

The initial investigation raised suspicions about Pandher and Koli’s involvement in the gruesome murders and led to their arrests in December 2006. Surinder Koli, who worked at Pandher’s home, initially confessed to his involvement in the crimes. These confessions, along with the recovery of body parts and other evidence, led to their arrests.(Nitahri Case Accused Acquitted)

CBI took over the Nithari case in 2007

However, the case’s complexity and the scale of the crimes prompted the involvement of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), a federal agency responsible for investigating major crimes in India. The CBI took over the Nithari case, filing multiple cases against Pandher and Koli in 2007.

Multiple child rape and murder charges were brought against Surinder Koli. In a previous statement, Koli acknowledged eating the victims’ body parts and having sex with them. The two were also held responsible for the murder and rape of a 20-year-old woman.(Nitahri Case Accused Acquitted)

Allahabad High Court acquitted Koli and Pandher in several cases in 2021

The CBI’s investigation led to their conviction in several cases, where they were found guilty of rape and murder. However, in a surprising turn of events, in 2021, the Allahabad High Court acquitted Surinder Koli in 12 Nithari killings cases, where he had been sentenced to death. Moninder Singh Pandher, the co-accused, was also acquitted in two cases. These acquittals were attributed to the lack of evidence.

The Nithari case remains one of the most shocking and heinous criminal cases in India’s history and has raised questions about the handling of such complex cases by the Indian legal system.
