Chennai, 16 October(City Times): Southern Railway ticket checking drives: The Southern Railway is unwavering in its commitment to providing exceptional services for authorized rail travellers. With the goal of deterring ticketless and irregular travel, the railway consistently conducts extensive ticket checking initiatives. These efforts, which include Ambush Checks, Fortress Checks, and Cross Country Checks, not only enhance the travel experience but also ensure strict compliance with ticketing regulations.

Intensive Ticket Checking Drives Yield Record-Breaking Results

On the 15th of October, 2023, the Headquarters Flying Squad of the Southern Railway achieved an unprecedented milestone. With an astounding 3,508 cases of ticketless or irregular travel registered, the squad collected a record-breaking Rs. 22.7 lakhs in fines on a single day.

These intensive ticket checking drives took place at key stations, including Dr MGR Chennai Central, Perambur, Erode, Coimbatore Junction, and Ernakulam Junction. The relentless efforts of the ticket checking staff have led to these exceptional results.

Notable Contributors to Record Earnings

Several dedicated individuals have significantly contributed to these record-breaking earnings. Among them, Shri P. Dilip, Chief Ticket Inspector, handled 338 cases, resulting in a revenue of Rs. 2.19 lakhs. Shri C.A. Sivakumar, Chief Ticket Inspector, registered 269 cases, with revenue totaling Rs. 1.86 lakhs. Ms. G. Jothi, Dy. Chief Ticket Inspector, managed 209 cases, amounting to a remarkable Rs. 1.36 lakhs in revenue.

Ticket Checking Performance in FY 2023-24

Southern Railway’s commitment to strict ticket checking and regulation compliance is evident in its financial performance. From April 1, 2023, to October 15, 2023, the railway collected Rs. 57.48 Crores in penalties from passengers for various offenses during travel. A total of 10.39 lakh cases were registered during this period, covering offenses like travel without tickets, irregular tickets, and unbooked luggage. Chennai Division collected Rs.21.92 Crores revenue which is the highest ticket checking revenue among the divisions during the period from April 2023 to 15th October 2023. 

Chennai Division Collected A Revenue Of Rs. 11.01 Crores

The Chennai Division led the way by collecting a revenue of Rs. 11.01 Crores, marking it as the highest ticket checking revenue among the divisions in this fiscal year. The Thiruvananthapuram Division followed closely with Rs. 4.41 Crores in earnings, while the Palakkad Division achieved a notable Rs. 4.22 Crores in ticket checking revenue. The Salem, Madurai, and Tiruchirappalli Divisions also made substantial contributions with revenues of Rs. 4.12 Crores, Rs. 2.74 Crores, and Rs. 2.48 Crores, respectively.

Their commitment ensures that passengers travel with valid authority and that service quality is consistently elevated. It is essential for the public to uphold their responsibility and travel with valid tickets or passes, as traveling without them is punishable under sections 137, 138, and 139 of the Railways Act of 1989. Southern Railway continues to lead by example, ensuring the integrity of its ticketing and travel regulations.
