Chennai, 26 July (City Times): In a solemn ceremony in Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin paid homage to Major Mariappan Saravanan, a decorated soldier and Vir Chakra awardee, who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Kargil War. On the eve of the 24th anniversary of India’s victory in “Operation Vijay” against infiltrating Pakistani troops, CM Stalin laid a wreath at the memorial of the esteemed war hero.
Dignitaries Accompanying the Chief Minister
Accompanied by Duraimurugan, the Minister for Water Resources, K.N.Nehru, the Minister for Municipal Administration, Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, the Minister for School Education, and District Collector M.Pradeep Kumar, Chief Minister Stalin visited the memorial located in the Cantonment area of the city to pay his respects.
Honoring the Fallen Hero
Joining CM Stalin in honoring Major Saravanan were senior army officials of the 117th Infantry Battalion (Territorial Army) of Tiruchirapalli, along with esteemed revenue and police officials, who also laid wreaths and paid their heartfelt tributes. (Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin)
A Heroic Tale of Sacrifice
During the Kargil War, Major Saravanan, serving in the Bihar Regiment, was assigned the daunting task of capturing “Point 4268,” a heavily fortified Pakistani position in the Batalik sub-sector of Kargil, positioned at an astounding height of 14,229 feet. On May 28, 1999, despite facing intense firing from the intruding Pakistani forces, Major Saravanan, codenamed ‘Chengiz Khan’ for the operation, displayed extraordinary courage and eliminated four intruders beforemaking the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. His body was recovered 45 days later, after the war concluded.

Major Saravanan’s indomitable spirit and bravery earned him the well-deserved title of the “Hero of Batalik” within military circles.
