Tamilnadu CM Stalin Appeals to Jaishankar – Stalin Seeks Diplomatic Intervention to Alleviate Tensions in the Region
Rising Incidents of Detention Spark Concern for Fishermen’s Livelihoods
Chennai, 14 Sept (City Times): Tamilnadu CM Stalin Appeals to Jaishankar : Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has taken a proactive step by reaching out to India’s External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, urging him to initiate diplomatic efforts with the Sri Lankan government to secure the release of 17 fishermen detained by the Sri Lankan Navy.
Stalin’s Appeal:
In his letter to Minister Jaishankar, Chief Minister Stalin highlighted the pressing issue, emphasizing that “three mechanized boats and 17 Tamil Nadu fishermen were apprehended by the Sri Lankan Navy, allegedly for crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) into Sri Lankan waters.” (Tamil Nadu CM Stalin Appeals to Jaishankar)
Boat Details:
Stalin provided specific details about the apprehended boats, stating that they bore registration numbers IND-TN-10-MM-407, IND-TN-08-MM-214, and IND-TN-16-MM-2046.

Impact on Fishermen:
The Tamil Nadu CM expressed deep concern over the recurring incidents of Tamil Nadu fishermen being detained by the Sri Lankan Navy. He highlighted that these fishermen, who rely on fishing as their primary and sole source of livelihood, sometimes unintentionally drift into Sri Lankan waters due to the absence of clear demarcation and navigational challenges. The frequent apprehensions have escalated tensions, disrupted lives, and imposed severe economic hardships on the affected fishermen and their families. (Tamil Nadu CM Stalin Appeals to Jaishankar)
A Plea for Urgent Action:
Stalin urged Minister Jaishankar to employ immediate diplomatic measures to secure the release of the Indian fishermen without delay. He emphasized the need for a swift resolution to the ongoing crisis.
A Call for Diplomatic Resolution:
The Chief Minister also called upon the External Affairs Minister to engage in “lasting diplomatic solutions through bilateral negotiations” with the Sri Lankan government. Such negotiations, he believes, are essential to bring peace and stability to the lives of thousands of Indian fishermen who continue to face challenges in the region.

Rising Tensions:
Stalin’s appeal comes at a time when tensions have been escalating due to a surge in attacks on Indian fishermen by Sri Lankan counterparts. These incidents are believed to be a fallout of the recent economic slowdown in Sri Lanka, which has exacerbated the situation.
The appeal by Chief Minister Stalin underscores the critical need for swift and decisive action to address the apprehension of Indian fishermen, mitigate tensions in the region, and safeguard the livelihoods of those who depend on the sea for their sustenance.
