TN bets big on Growth of defence and aerospace

Chennai, 23 OCT (City Times): (TN bets big on Growth of defence and aerospace): Since the launch of the Tamil Nadu Defence Industrial Corridor (TANDIC) four years ago, the state has been making all efforts to position itself as a hub for the aerospace and defence sectors.

TIDCO is the nodal agency for five nodes

The Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) is the nodal agency. Five nodes – Chennai, Coimbatore, Hosur, Salem and Trichy – have been identified for TANDIC with the focus on new defence production facilities.

And, clusters with testing and certification facilities, export facilitation centres, and technology transfer facilitation have also been created.
TN clocks ₹17,000 crore in investment MoUs

Tamil Nadu has clocked about ₹17,000 crore in investment MoUs, which will increase substantially, thanks to the Union government’s procurement policy, ” said industries minister T R B Rajaa.

“We see immense promise in space tech, aircraft design and manufacturing, small aircraft manufacturing, drones, ammunition and propulsion systems,” he noted. (TN bets big on Growth of defence and aerospace)

Creating an enabling infrastructure and ecosystem

As a first step, the state released the Tamil Nadu Aerospace and Defence Industrial Policy in 2022. “As big-ticket aerospace and defence investments come in, we need to create an enabling infrastructure and ecosystem. We recently announced the commissioning of a drone testing facility and were the first state to start a drone corporation,” said Rajaa.

“At least four other facilities are being planned to test electronic warfare, electronic optics, EMI-EMC and communication. A mechanical testing facility is also planned,” he added. (TN bets big on Growth of defence and aerospace)

TIDCO earmarks large tract of land at Manapparai

TIDCO has earmarked a large tract of land at Manapparai for small arms to leverage capabilities of the existing ordnance factory’s suppliers, said B Krishnamoorthy, special secretary/project director, TIDCO.

“As Chennai is an electronics hub, we plan to create a dedicated strategic electronics cluster,” he remarked.
TIDCO is developing two projects, an industrial park for defence components and an anchor investment manufacturing project in aerospace and defence in addition to a ₹ 166 crore common engineering facility for advanced defence manufacturing in partnership with Tata Technologies.

The Union government will provide a grant of ₹46 crore and TIDCO and Tata Technologies will put in the rest of the money. (TN bets big on Growth of defence and aerospace)
