Srinagar, July 29 (City Times) : (Muharram) Embracing the spirit of unity and reverence, the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha, graced the solemn occasion of the 10th Muharram procession in the historic old city of Srinagar on a serene Saturday. During the event, he distributed refreshments among the mourners and expressed his tributes to Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions, praising their sacrifices for righteousness and the greater good of humanity.

The Zuljinah procession, which took place at Botakadal in downtown Srinagar, witnessed the presence of senior civil and police officials, including Additional Director General of Police Kashmir, Vijay Kumar, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Vijay Kumar Bhiduri, Senior Superintendent of Police Srinagar, Rakesh Balwal, and Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Muhammad Aijaz Asad, who accompanied the Lieutenant Governor.

During the procession, Manoj Sinha offered Chaddar to Zuljinah and extended refreshments to the mourners present on the occasion. The smooth conduct of the procession from Botakadal to Imambargah Zadibal was ensured by the administration through necessary arrangements.

The event witnessed a significant turnout of Shia mourners who carried religious banners and raised religious slogans while marching through the old city.

Earlier, on July 27, the J&K government permitted the 8th Muharram procession on its traditional route, from Guru Bazar to Dalgate in Srinagar, after a gap of 34 years. The peaceful conduct of the Muharram procession on that day was seen as a testament to the evolving change and normalcy in the region, according to the government’s statement.

The annual Muharram procession is observed by Shia Muslims across the world to commemorate the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS), the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, and his companions in the historic Battle of Karbala, which took place 1,400 years ago.
