Health Minister Ma Subramanian has initiated statewide inspections of restaurants after 42 people who dined at this eatery fell ill. This heartbreaking incident has sent shockwaves across the region.

The Untimely Demise

Kalaiyarasi, a resident of A S Pettai, indulged in a shawarma meal on the night of September 16. Unfortunately, she suffered severe discomfort the following day. Her family rushed her to a private hospital, but due to staff shortages, she did not receive any treatment. Government Response

Health Minister Ma Subramanian stated that around 200 people had dined at the restaurant on the same day as Kalaiyarasi. Immediate action was taken to identify and hospitalize those affected. Three food samples from the restaurant were sent for testing at a laboratory in Salem. Subsequently, the restaurant was sealed, and its license was revoked. Shawarma Ban and Inspection Teams

Following this tragic incident, the sale of shawarma and grill chicken has been prohibited throughout the district. A dedicated team of 13 health inspectors and other officials from the food safety department has been deployed to inspect all restaurants in the area.

Minister’s Statement

Health Minister Ma Subramanian expressed his condolences over the young girl’s death and emphasized the importance of conducting regular quality checks at restaurants across the state. Food Safety Measures

Data from the health and family welfare department shows that between April and August, the food safety department conducted 38,191 inspections across the state, with 1,478 of them taking place in Namakkal. The health minister also highlighted that officials had been conducting raids on eateries selling shawarma and other perishable foods since last month. During these operations, 280 kg of spoiled food items were discovered and disposed of, underlining the critical importance of food safety measures.
