Chennai, August 15, (City Times): (Independence Day at Chennai Port) The Independence Day of India was marked with grand celebrations at the Chennai Port Authority on August 15, 2023. The event took place at the Babu Jagajivan Ram Stadium, Chennai Port Tondiarpet Housing Colony, Tondiarpet, Chennai. The ceremony was graced by the presence of distinguished officials and participants, and it encompassed a series of significant announcements and achievements.
In a momentous display of patriotism, Shri Sunil Paliwal, IAS, Chairperson of the Chennai Port Authority, hoisted the National Flag, a symbol of India’s unity and freedom. Following this solemn act, he inspected the Guard of Honour, paying homage to the dedication and commitment of the Port employees. Shri Paliwal then addressed the gathering, touching upon various topics of significance.

Chennai Port’s Achievements and Vision for the Future
During his address, Shri Sunil Paliwal highlighted the remarkable achievements of the Chennai Port, emphasizing the increase in cargo handling which reached a remarkable 48.95 million metric tons in 2023, even in the face of stiff competition. Chennai Port has achieved Net surplus of Rs.156.06 crores in 2022-23, which is the highest in the last decade.
Moreover, the Chairperson elucidated the port’s future plans, with particular emphasis on the New Elevated Corridor project from Maduravoyal to Chennai Port and the Multi Modal Logistic Park at Mappedu. He underscored these initiatives as pivotal game-changers that would not only elevate the status of Chennai Port but also contribute significantly to the progress of the entire state of Tamil Nadu.
Community Initiatives and Sustainability
Shri Paliwal underscored the Port Authority’s commitment to community welfare by announcing comprehensive revitalization plans for the Tondiarpet Housing Colony, Chennai Port Higher Secondary School, and the Babu Jagjivan Ram Stadium. The Chennai Port Higher Secondary School witnessed a remarkable transformation, including a reduction of school fees by two-thirds and the introduction of free uniforms, textbooks, stationeries, and school bags for all students. Notably, the Port also established a School & Vocational Centre in collaboration with the NGO “Swambhodhini” for special children.
In alignment with their commitment to sustainability, the Port Authority embarked on a “Green Port” initiative by planting 12,000 saplings, with plans to add 3,000 more this year, contributing to a greener and healthier environment.

Shri Sunil Paliwal concluded his address by inspiring all present to unite under a shared commitment to the development of the port, acknowledging its pivotal role in contributing to the nation’s progress. The celebration was a harmonious blend of cultural performances that showcased the rich heritage of India, evoking a sense of national pride and unity among the attendees.
