Southern Railway Vigilance Awareness Week 2023: An Strong Step Towards Corruption-Free Railways

Chennai, 01 November(City Times) Southern Railway Vigilance Awareness Week 2023 : Southern Railway observes Vigilance Awareness Week from October 30 to November 5, 2023, with a focus on combating corruption and promoting ethical values. The event featured a seminar graced by Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT/Madras.

The Objective: Combating Corruption

The primary objective of Southern Railway’s Vigilance Awareness Week is to combat corruption and create awareness among railway employees, passengers, and the general public. This initiative emphasizes a participative and pro-active approach to address the existence, causes, gravity, and threat posed by corruption. The theme for this year’s Vigilance Awareness Week is “Say no to corruption; commit to the Nation.”(Southern Railway Vigilance Awareness)

Key Seminar and Presentation

As part of the celebrations, a special seminar and presentation took place at Southern Railway Headquarters on November 1, 2023. The seminar was organized by the Vigilance department, and it featured Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT/Madras, as the Chief Guest. Notable participants included Shri R.N. Singh, General Manager, Shri Kaushal Kishore, Additional General Manager, and PHODs of various Railway departments. Additionally, Divisional Railway Managers (DRMs) and Chief Workshop Managers of field units joined the event through video conferencing.(Southern Railway Vigilance Awareness)

The Role of Vigilance

In his inaugural address, Shri R.N. Singh, General Manager, highlighted the critical role vigilance plays in preventing corruption and establishing moral principles in the workplace. He commended the Vigilance department’s efforts, which have made use of cutting-edge tools like drone surveys, Google Earth Pro software, Handheld Terminals (HHT) for staff monitoring, and advanced information systems for freight operations and passenger reservations. These efforts have successfully prevented economic losses amounting to approximately Rs. 10 crores during the current financial year.

Digital Transformation and Key Technologies

Chief Guest Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT/Madras, delivered a keynote address on digital transformation. He emphasized the significance of technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Big Data and Analytics, Blockchain, Cloud Computing, IoT/IIoT/CPS, Robotic Process Automation, Cybersecurity, 5G Technology, Augmented and Virtual Reality, Digital Twins, and Semi-Conductors in achieving digital transformation. The Chief Guest encouraged government departments to deploy advanced technologies to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.

Railways’ Quick Grievance Redressal

The Chief Guest commended the Railways’ quick grievance redressal mechanisms provided through portals like RAILMADAD, CPGRAMS, RPGRAMS, and more. He highlighted the role of technological advancements and preventive measures by the Vigilance department in improving the Railway system’s efficiency and functionality.

Handbooks and Initiatives

During the event, two handbooks were released: “FAQ on Procurement of Goods” and “Arbitration – Dos’ and Dont’s.” These resources are valuable for promoting transparency and ethical practices. The event also featured the launch of an online quiz and a video on PIDPI (Public Interest Disclosure and Protection of Informers).

Looking Ahead: Activities for Vigilance Awareness Week

Southern Railway, both at its headquarters and in its divisions, has planned various activities in connection with Vigilance Awareness Week. These initiatives are geared toward fostering ethics, combating corruption, and promoting transparency within the railway system.
