Chandrayaan-3 Nears Moon, to Enter Lunar Orbit on Saturday

ISRO Announces Successful Progress of Third Moon Mission (Chandrayaan-3)

Soft Landing on the Moon Scheduled for August 23

Chennai, 04 August (City Times) : The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) achieved another significant milestone in its Chandrayaan-3 mission as the spacecraft covered approximately two-thirds of the distance to the Moon. The Lunar Orbit Injection (LOI) is scheduled for August 5, 2023, around 1900 hrs, according to an announcement by ISRO.

Following the successful trans-lunar injection (TLI) on August 1, the spacecraft is now on a lunar transfer trajectory and is heading towards the Moon’s vicinity. The Chandrayaan-3 was injected into the TransLunar Orbit after completing five Orbit raising maneuvers since its launch on July 14.

In a tweet, ISRO shared the successful perigee-firing performed at ISTRAC (ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network), confirming the spacecraft’s injection into the translunar orbit. A photo of the Moon was posted, signifying the spacecraft’s next destination. (Chandrayaan-3)

The Lunar-Orbit Insertion (LOI) operation has been scheduled for August 5, 2023, as per ISRO’s plans. This phase marks the spacecraft’s lunar-centric orbit, during which it will orbit the Moon four times, progressively approaching the lunar surface with each orbit.

The highly anticipated soft landing on the Moon is planned for August 23. During this critical phase, the lander will disengage from the propulsion module and make a delicate descent towards the Moon’s southern polar region, aiming for a precise touchdown. Achieving a safe landing requires precise braking techniques and meticulous planning.

Before the landing attempt, ISRO will conduct thorough imaging of the landing site region to identify safe zones, free of hazards and potential obstacles. The mission’s objective is to explore the hitherto unexplored south polar region of the Moon, potentially uncovering new scientific insights and data. (Chandrayaan-3)

As ISRO continues its meticulous preparations for the soft landing, the nation eagerly awaits the historic moment when India’s lunar mission will touch the Moon’s surface, furthering the country’s space exploration efforts and contributing to humanity’s understanding of the cosmos.
