Indian Air Force: Boosting Indigenous Aerospace Sector with a Landmark Decision
LCA Tejas Fleet Set to Expand Significantly in Next 15 Years
Seville, Spain 16 Sep (City Times): (Indian Air Force): In a significant move aimed at strengthening India’s indigenous aerospace capabilities, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has officially unveiled plans to procure approximately 100 additional LCA Mark 1A fighter jets, all proudly made in India. This announcement was made during a pivotal moment in Spain, as Indian Air Force Chief, Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari, was interacting with the media after receiving the first C-295 transport aircraft in the country.

A Strategic Necessity: Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari highlighted the crucial role of the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mark 1A in replacing the aging fleet of MiG series aircraft, including MiG-21, MiG-23, and MiG-27. These aircraft have been gradually phased out, making it imperative to bolster the inventory of LCA class aircraft. He stated, “Apart from the 83 LCA Mark 1A aircraft that we have already contracted for, we are moving a case for around 100 more aircraft.”
Modernizing the Fleet: The IAF’s intent to acquire these indigenously manufactured aircraft is part of a broader strategy to replace its MiG-series fighter jets. These plans have been meticulously presented to the Defense Ministry and other stakeholders within the national security establishment. This strategic decision aligns with India’s ongoing efforts to modernize its air force.

A Testament to Indigenous Prowess: The call for an additional 100 LCA Tejas fighters comes on the heels of a comprehensive review meeting of the indigenous fighter jet program, which took place last month. This meeting involved all key stakeholders, including Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). The procurement order signifies a substantial resurgence of LCA Tejas fighters within the Indian Air Force.
A Growing Arsenal: The Indian Air Force’s inventory will witness a remarkable transformation, with plans for 40 LCA, over 180 LCA Mark-1A, and a minimum of 120 LCA Mark-2 aircraft over the next 15 years. This massive infusion of indigenous fighter jets underscores India’s commitment to enhancing its defense capabilities and achieving self-reliance in the aerospace sector.

Enhanced Capabilities: The LCA Mark 1A aircraft represents an advanced iteration of the Tejas aircraft, featuring cutting-edge avionics and radar systems that surpass those of the initial 40 LCAs supplied to the Air Force.
Proudly Made in India: An impressive aspect of the new LCA Mark 1A aircraft is its indigenous content, which exceeds 65 percent. This underscores India’s ability to manufacture and equip its armed forces with state-of-the-art technology.
Championing Self-Reliance: Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari emphasized that the LCA program epitomizes the Indian Air Force’s commitment to indigenous aircraft fleet development. It also serves as a prominent symbol of India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) and Make in India initiatives, particularly in the aerospace sector.
The Indian Air Force’s resolute move to acquire 100 additional LCA Mark 1A fighter jets marks a significant stride toward bolstering India’s defense capabilities while fostering the nation’s self-reliance in aerospace technology.
