Deepfake : Mumbai Cyber Police Take Action Against Deepfake Video Exploiting Sachin Tendulkar

Deepfake : Sachin Tendulkar himself took to social media to caution the public about the existence of a deepfake video falsely endorsing a gaming app.

Deepfake : Mumbai 18 jan 2024 (CITY TIMES). In a recent development, the Mumbai Cyber Police have initiated legal action against a gaming app involved in the creation and promotion of a deepfake video featuring legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar. The FIR has been registered under relevant sections as the former batting maestro’s old video was manipulated to mislead the public through a false promotional campaign.

Unraveling the Deepfake Deception: Sachin’s Cautionary Tweet

Sachin Tendulkar himself took to social media, specifically Twitter, to caution the public about the existence of a deepfake video falsely endorsing a gaming app. The video not only distorted Sachin’s voice but also portrayed misinformation about his daughter, Sara Tendulkar’s alleged frequent engagement with the app. Expressing concern over the misuse of technology, Sachin urged the public to report such deceptive content and called upon social media platforms to take swift action against misinformation and fake news.

The Cyber Police’s Swift Response: A Ray of Hope

Following Sachin’s alert, the Maharashtra Cyber Police, Union Electronics and Information Technology Ministry, and Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrashekar were tagged in the cricketer’s tweet. Hours later, Rajeev Chandrasekhar acknowledged Sachin’s concerns and assured that the government would soon implement tighter rules under the Information Technology Act. These measures aim to ensure compliance by online platforms operating in the country, particularly in addressing the growing threat of deepfakes and misinformation fueled by artificial intelligence.

Government’s Commitment to Stricter Rules

Expressing gratitude towards Sachin Tendulkar for bringing attention to the deepfake video, Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar emphasized the significance of combating deepfakes and misinformation. He stated that such content poses a threat to the safety and trust of Indian users, necessitating strict compliance by online platforms with the advisory issued by the Centre. Chandrasekhar confirmed that the government is on the verge of notifying tighter rules under the Information Technology Act to ensure platforms adhere to the guidelines and take prompt action against deceptive content.

The Persistent Threat of Deepfakes

This incident involving Sachin Tendulkar is not the first of its kind. On November 6 last year, a modified video of actor Rashmika Mandanna surfaced online, sparking concerns about digital safety. The video quickly went viral, prompting social media users to confirm its status as a deepfake. The incident served as a stark reminder of the prevalence of deceptive practices in the digital realm and the urgent need for comprehensive measures to address this growing threat.

As the Mumbai Cyber Police takes decisive action against the creators of the Sachin Tendulkar deepfake video, the incident highlights the pervasive threat posed by deepfakes and misinformation. Sachin’s proactive approach in alerting the public and the subsequent assurance from the government to implement stricter rules reflect a collective commitment to safeguarding the online space. As technology advances, so do the challenges associated with its misuse, necessitating constant vigilance and robust regulatory measures to ensure a secure digital environment for users. The Sachin Tendulkar deepfake case serves as a call to action, urging stakeholders to collaborate in the ongoing battle against deceptive practices in the ever-evolving landscape of cyberspace.
