Dehradun, 04 October (City Times): Uttarakhand Pumped Storage Projects: The hill state of Uttarakhand is set to witness a transformational surge in energy infrastructure, as a momentous Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) worth a staggering Rs 15,000 crore was inked between the Uttarakhand Government and JSW Neo Energy Limited. This landmark agreement was sealed in the august presence of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami during the Uttarakhand Global Investor Summit 2023 roadshow held in New Delhi.

Big Energy Boost: Uttarakhand Pumped Storage Projects

At the heart of this monumental agreement lies the development of two pumped storage projects, each boasting a formidable 1500 MW capacity, situated in the breathtakingly beautiful region of Almora. These projects are not merely about generating power; they hold the promise of powering progress across multiple fronts.

One of the most significant aspects of this venture is its potential to uplift the local economy. It is estimated that this scheme will create employment opportunities for around 1000 individuals. Water for All: Drinking Water and Irrigation

Beyond the realm of power generation, the MOU’s impact extends to addressing vital needs in Uttarakhand. The pumped storage projects are set to provide a lifeline to the region by ensuring a robust drinking water supply to a substantial population. Furthermore, they will bolster irrigation facilities for agriculture, potentially transforming the agricultural landscape of Uttarakhand.

The Blueprint: Uttarakhand Pumped Storage Project Details

The blueprint for this ambitious project envisages two self-identified pumped storage projects, both with a substantial 1500 MW capacity. The development timeline spans approximately 5-6 years. These projects are strategically planned with the lower dam/reservoir at a distance of 8-10 km from the Kosi river at Site 1 in Joskote village of Almora. The upper reservoir is slated for Site 2, located at Kurchaun village of Almora, approximately 16 km away from the Kosi river.

A Vision for Uttarakhand’s Growth

This visionary scheme is not limited to energy generation alone. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami also anticipated collaboration in diverse sectors. These include the development of pump storage plants, cement production, sports infrastructure, training centers, drinking water supply initiatives, and the restoration and beautification of temples in the Kumaon region, including the Manaskhand Temple Mala, supported under corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives.

The Uttarakhand State Government has demonstrated its commitment to catalyzing the growth of pumped storage projects in the state. To facilitate this, the government has devised the Uttarakhand Pumped Storage Project Policy, which offers substantial incentives to developers, aiming to accelerate progress in this crucial sector.

The signing of the MOU was a momentous occasion attended by key figures. Dr. Meenakshi Sundaram, Secretary, and Shri Vinay Shankar Pandey were present from the Uttarakhand Government. On behalf of JSW Neo Energy Limited, Shri Gyan Badr Kumar, the Director, graced the occasion. Additionally, Shri Rohit Meena, Managing Director of SIDCUL, added significance to the event.
